Road & Sidewalk Work

Street Sweeping

Street sweeping is conducted during spring, summer, and autumn and extends until snow removal begins.

Snow Removal

During the winter months, major thoroughfares receive priority, while secondary streets are plowed routinely throughout the duration of the snowstorm. Property owners are required to remove snow from the sidewalks on their property within five hours of the end of the storm or 1 p.m. the next day, should the storm end during the night.

Sand is available to residential property owners for pickup during regular business hours at the Public Works Department maintenance facility at 230 Dix Avenue. Please check in with the office prior to picking up the sand.

Right of Way Work

Any work proposed to be done within the City's rights of way, including excavation for gas services, electrical services, water services, storm and sanitary sewer services, replacement and new sidewalks, and curb cuts for driveway installation require a permit and approval by the City Engineer and/ or Building & Codes Department. A permit may be obtained at the City Clerks Office at City Hall upon payment of the $40 fee or $2.50 per sq. ft. for a street opening. For more information, please call 518-761-3800.

Sidewalk Repair

Repair and upkeep of sidewalks are the responsibility of each property owner. The City has a 50 / 50 replacement program for residential homeowners, in which the city will participate with the homeowner for sidewalk replacement. This program is to encourage the upgrading of sidewalks throughout the City of Glens Falls. For details, please call the Public Works Department 518-761-3834.
